Betreutes Wohnen hat sich als ein zukunftsweisendes Wohnkonzept erwiesen; allerdings existieren weder ein Gesetz noch eine Institution, die verbindliche Mindeststandards der Betreuungs- und Pflegeleistungen definieren bzw. sicherstellen. Mit der in dem vorliegenden Titel vorgestellten DIN-Norm 77800 wurde ein einheitliches Instrument zur freiwilligen Qualitätssicherung auf dem Markt des Betreuten Wohnens geschaffen. Die Norm definiert Mindestqualitätsstandards, die für Anbieter eine Orientierung schaffen, welche Leistungsangebote sie bereitstellen sollten. Gleichzeitig wird für die Verbraucher damit die Leistungstransparenz des Wohnangebotes gewährleistet.
