Annotation of standard text ASME A17.7:2007(R2022) :

This performance-based Safety Code covers the design, construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of the following equipment and its associated parts, rooms, spaces, and hoistways, where located in or adjacent to a building or structure: hoisting and lowering mechanisms, equipped with a car, that move between two or more landings.  This equipment includes, but is not limited to, elevators; power-driven stairways and walkways for carrying persons between landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, escalators and moving walks; hoisting and lowering mechanisms, equipped with a car, that serve two or more landings and are restricted to the carrying of material by their limited size or limited access to the car;  This equipment includes, but is not limited to, dumbwaiters and material lifts. As a progressive alternative to the “prescriptive” A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, A17.7 allows for more flexibility in problem-solving.  A17.7 is specifically intended for new elevator technology and practices.  It aides jurisdictional authorities with guidelines to address new technology within current safety and performance requirements. This Safety Code is to be used in conjunction with other volumes of ASME’s A17 series of safety codes.  Careful application of these A17 safety codes will help users to comply with applicable regulations within their jurisdictions , while achieving the operational and safety benefits to be gained from the many industry best-practices detailed within these volumes. Intended for anyone engaged in the safety of elevators, escalators and related conveyances, including those responsible for:  design, engineering and manufacture; installation, operation, testing, maintenance, alteration and repair; inspection; plans, contracts, administration, insurance and liability; property, facilities and plant management; and emergency response.
