Norma je překladem ISO 5964-1985 Pokyny pro vypracování a rozvíjení vícejazyčných tezaurů. Rozsáhlá technická norma (cca 60 stran formát A4) navazuje na ČSN 01 0181 až ČSN 01 0197. Slouží především k dosažení kompatibility mezi tezaury informačních systémů a služeb. Tuto normu je třeba používat současně s ISO 2788 - Pravidla pro vypracování a rozvíjení jednojazyčných tezaurů. ČSN 01 0172 byla schválena 3.5.1991 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.4.1992
