Norma stanoví zásady označování závitů na technických výkresech a v technické dokumentaci. Úplné označování stanoví příslušné normy jednotlivých druhů závitů. Norma tabulkovou formou uvádí přehled závitů pro všeobecné použití a přehled zvláštních závitů včetně jejich základního označování. Norma dále uvádí příklady označování vícechodých závitů, levých závitů, značek tolerančního pole závitu, uložení v závitovém spojení a délky zašroubování. Norma nahrazuje ČSN 01 4000 z 20.10.1956 a ČSN 01 4004 z 10.10.1962.
