Norma určuje české a slovenské názvy základních pojmů, používaných v oboru obloukového a elektrostruskového sváření a naváření a vymezuje jejich význam. V normě jsou zapracovány údaje z ST SEV 5277-85. Pro informaci jsou uvedeny ruské, anglické a německé názvy. V pěti částech je slovensky a česky uvedeno názvosloví a slovensky je definováno cca 130 hesel. ČSN 05 00020 byla schválena 5.12.1988 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.7.1989. Nahradila ČSN 05 0002 z 9.8.1972
