Norma platí pro pístové spalovací motory všech účelů a způsobů použití. Stanoví názvy a definice jejich jednotlivých druhů, jakož i názvy a definice základních pojmů souvisících s roztříděním těchto motorů podle prakticky důležitých hledisek. Česky definuje asi 150 pojmů. ČSN 09 0022 byla schválena 19.1.1972 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.1.1993. Nahradila ČSN 09 0022 z r.1960, dále čl. 39 - 69 ČSN 30 0025 z r.1959 a čl. 47 ČSN 30 0027 z r.1967
