Norma platí pro chemický rozbor niklových rud a určuje stanovení oxidu hlinitého chelatometrickou metodou. Při provádění rozboru musí být dodržena všechna ustanovení podle ČSN 44 1701. Podstata metody: Vzorek se rozloží kyselinami, po odstranění oxidu křemičitého a dotavení nerozpustného zbytku uhličitanem sodnodraselným se vysráží hydroxidy hexamethylentetraminem, sraženina se rozpustí v kyselině chlorovodíkové, hliník se oddělí hydroxidem sodným jako hlinitan a stanoví chelatometricky. Postup při provádění normalizované zkoušky je podrobně popsán. ČSN 44 1603 byla schválena 20.7.1990 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.7.1991. Nahradila část 3 ČSN 44 1602 z 4.12.1974 a spolu s ČSN 44 1602 a ČSN 44 1604 až ČSN 44 1617 ji nahradila v plném rozsahu
