Norma platí pro výrobu, dodávání a zkoušení křemenců a silicitů, používaných pro výrobu křemičitých žárovzdorných výrobků, feroslitin a čistého křemíku. Norma sice v tabulce 1 uvádí procentuální obsah křemene (jako SiO2), ale asi většinou ve formě vázané jako křemičitany, protože jde o velmi vysoké hodnoty. (Vždy jsou vyšší než 95%.) Neobsahuje tedy údaj o obsahu krystalického (volného) křemene v křemencích a silicitech, ani upozornění na jeho fibroplastický účinek. ČSN 72 1230 byla schválena 31.8.1989 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.6.1990. Nahradila ČSN 72 1230 z 28.5.1975
