Tato norma určuje metodu stanovení koliformních bakterií v nedesinfikovaných vodách (povrchová, podzemní, odpadní voda, apod.). Metoda je určena zejména pro povrchovou vodu. Lze ji použít i pro ty pitné vody (zejména nedesinfikované), kde nadměrný růst doprovodné mikroflóry znemožňuje použití metody podle ČSN EN ISO 9308-1. Metoda nemůže být použita pro vody, u nichž nerozpuštěné látky ruší membránovou filtraci nebo vysoký počet jiných organismů svými inhibičními faktory omezuje růst stanovovaných bakterií
