Norma platí pro stanovení ochranné účinnosti plastových folií, desek a spotřebilských obalů proti optickému záření v ultrafialové a viditelné části spektra, působícímu na balené výrobky, jejichž jakost je ohrožena fotochemickými reakcemi (tj. poživatiny i chemické sloučeniny). Jsou normalizovány spekrometrické a aktinometrické metody. V čl. 36 normy je upozornění na ochranu zdraví při použití zdroje ultrafialového záření, a to jak pokožky, tak očí. ČSN 77 0338 byla schválena 22.12.1989 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.2.1991
