Norma platí pro zkoušení obalových lepidel a stanoví společné zásady pro odběr, přípravu a kondicionování zkušebních vzorků, charakterizuje zkušební podmínky a určuje společné požadavky na přístroje a pomůcky pro zkoušky. Norma stanoví způsob senzorického hodnocení lepidel. Norma se nezabývá hygienickými problematikami těchto lepidel. ČSN 77 0840 byla schválena 11.8.1986 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.7.1987. Nahradila ČSN 66 8514 z 9.9.1968 v rozsahu platnosti pro zkoušení obalových lepidel v části I, II, III, IV, VI a v části V, pouze čl. 17 - 21
