Tato norma určuje metodu stanovení obsahu vody v ethanolu, jakožto složce automobilových benzinů. Do titrační baňky coulometrického přístroje podle Karl Fischera se vstříkne zvážený vzorek. V titrační baňce na anodě vzniká coulometricky jód pro reakci Karl Fischera. Po titraci veškeré vody se přebytek jódu detekuje elektrometrickým detektorem konce titrace a titrace se ukončí. Na základě stechiometrie reakce reaguje jeden mol jódu s jedním molem vody, tudíž podle Faradayova zákona je množství vody přímo úměrné celkovému integrovanému proudu.
