Tato evropská norma specifikuje metodu plynové chromatografie pro stanovení obsahu vyšších alkoholů (propan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, butan-2-ol, 2-methylpropan-1-ol (isobutanol), 2-methylbutan-1-ol a 3-methylbutan-1-ol) od 0,1 % do 2,5 % (m/m), methanolu od 0,1 % do 3 % (m/m) a ostatních nečistot v rozsahu koncentrace od 0,1 % do 2 % (m/m) v ethanolu.
Metoda není použitelná pro vzorky denaturovaného ethanolu z důvodu možných interferencí.
Případný obsah vody ve vzorku se při analýze nestanoví, jelikož signál pro vodu není na chromatogramu viditelný. Je-li v nějaké specifikaci požadován údaj o obsahu alkoholu, musí být obsah vody stanoven odděleně a vzat do úvahy
