Norma určuje dvě metody stanovení fenolů ve vodách různého původu (např. podzemních, povrchových, průsakových a odpadních) v hmotnostních koncentracích 0,01 mg/l až 1 mg/l (neředěného vzorku). Ve zvláštních případech je dovoleno rozsah stanovení přizpůsobit změnou pracovních podmínek. V normě je popsáno stanovení fenolů (bez destilace) po extrakci a stanovení fenolů (bez extrakce) po destilaci.
