Tento dokument specifikuje metodu stanovení volného a celkového chloru ve vodě, která je snadno použitelná pro analýzy v laboratoři i v terénu. Je založena na měření absorpce červeného komplexu DPD fotometrem nebo na měření intenzity barvy vizuálním porovnáním barvy se stupnicí standardů, která je pravidelně kalibrována. Tato metoda je vhodná pro pitnou vodu a další druhy vod, ve kterých se další halogeny jako brom, jod a další oxidační činidla vyskytují v téměř zanedbatelných koncentracích. Tato metoda je v praxi použitelná pro koncentrace celkového chloru, vyjádřené jako chlor (Cl2), například od 0,000 4 mmol/l do 0,07 mmol/l (tj. od 0,03 mg/l do 5 mg/l).
