Norma specifikuje požadavky na archivní papír. Je použitelná na nepotištěné papíry určené pro dokumenty a publikace, u nichž se požaduje trvalé uchování a časté užívání. Archivní papír je primárně určen pro dokumenty a publikace, u nichž se předpokládá trvalé uchování vzhledem k jejich vysoké historické, právní nebo jinak významné hodnotě. Archivní papír je určen pro speciální účely, nikoliv pro běžné používání. Užívání termínu "archivní papír" neznamená, že všechny papíry uchovávané v archivech jsou "archivní papíry".
