Tato mezinárodní norma poskytuje směrnici použitou pro překlad termínů běžně používaných k popisu spojovacích součástí. Tato mezinárodní norma stanoví terminologii spojovacích součástí v angličtině, francouzštině a ruštině doporučené pro použití, pokud není uvedeno jinak ve vhodné výrobkové normě. V současnosti ne všechny spojovací součásti seznamu jsou pokryty ISO normativními dokumenty. Hlavní částí jsou položky vybrané z existujících národních norem. Také jsou zahrnuty zastaralé druhy (ty, které se používají ze skladu) za účelem, aby jejich terminologie mohla být normalizována ve stejném čase
