Ke stopovým prvkům důležitým z hlediska životního prostředí patří antimon, arsen, beryllium, bor, kadmium, chlor, chrom, kobalt, měď, fluor, olovo, mangan, rtuť, molybden, nikl, selen, thalium, vanad a zinek. Do tohoto seznamu lze zahrnout radioaktivní stopové prvky thorium a uran. Tento dokument neuvádí metody používané pro stanovení jednotlivých stopových prvků. Pro potvrzení přesnosti jakékoliv metody je zásadní analýza vhodných certifikovaných referenčních materiálů (CRM) (viz ISO Pokyn 33)
