Er ist anwendbar für OA, bei denen optisch gepumpte Fasern (Lichtwellenleiter-Verstärker (OFA), die entweder auf mit seltenen Erden dotierten Fasern oder dem Raman-Effekt beruhen), Halbleiter (optische Halbleiterverstärker (SOA)) und Wellenleiter (Planar-Lichtwellenleiter-Verstärkern (POWA)) zur Anwendung kommen. Er ist spezifisch auf Einkanalverstärker ausgerichtet. Prüfverfahren für Mehrkanalverstärker sind in der Normenreihe IEC 61290-10 festgelegt.
