Die Nahbereichskommunikationsmittel (DSRC) in der Straßenverkehrstelematik werden unter anderem zur Gebühren-(Maut-) Einhebung, zur automatischen Fahrzeugidentifizierung und zur Verkehrs- und Lenkerinformation eingesetzt. Für die Verwendung von Mikrowelle im 5,8-GHz-Band wurden die notwendigen Anforderungen für den Datenaustausch zwischen den infrastrukturellen Einrichtungen (straßenseitigen Geräten) und den im Fahrzeug notwendigen Ausrüstungen festgelegt. Durch die festgelegten Definitionen wird verhindert, daß den einzelnen Begriffen unterschiedliche Bedeutungen zugeordnet werden.
