Diese Internationale Norm legt drei Verfahren zum Bestimmen des Gehaltes an freiem Formaldehyd in den folgenden Harzen fest: a) Phenolharze, durch potentiometrische Titration in wässriger oder organischer Lösung (Hydroxylamin-hydrochlorid-Verfahren). Dieses Verfahren ist auf Harze mit Gehalten an freiem Formaldehyd bis zu einschließlich 15 % (m/m) anwendbar. Bei Gehalten an freiem Formaldehyd zwischen 15 % (m/m) und 30 % (m/m) kann es notwendig sein, die Konzentration der verwendeten Standardtitrierlösungnen dementsprechend einzustellen. b) Aminharze und Furanharze (Sulfit-Verfahren). Das Verfahren gilt für Harze, die durch Polykondensation von Harnstoff und Melamin mit Formaldehyd erhalten wurden, und für Furanharze, die durch Polykondensation von Furfurylalkohol (2-Hydroxymethylfuran) mit Formaldehyd ohne weitere Modifikation hergestellt wurden. c) Kondensationsharze (KCN-Verfahren), einschließlich Harnstoff-, Furan-, Melamin- und Phenolharze sowie Kombinationen und Modifikationen dieser Harze. Zweck dieser Internationalen Norm ist die Festlegung anerkannter und praktischer Bestimmungsverfahren (zum Beispiel um zu überprüfen, ob offizielle Vorschriften zur Handhabung gefährlicher Stoffe am Arbeitsplatz eingehalten werden). In diesen Zusammenhang sind alle Formaldehyd enthaltenden Harze möglichst weitestgehend einzubeziehen.
