Táto medzinárodná norma platí na ZÁKLADNÚ BEZPEČNOSŤ a NEVYHNUTNÉ PREVÁDZKOVÉ VLASTNOSTI SRDCOVÝCH DEFIBRILÁTOROV, ďalej uvádzaných ako ME PRÍSTROJE.Táto osobitná norma sa nevzťahuje na implantovateľné defibrilátory, diaľkovo ovládané DEFIBRILÁTORY, externé transkutánne kardiostimulátory alebo osobitne samostatne stojace monitory srdca (ktoré sú predmetom normy IEC 60601-2-27 [2]).V rozsahu platnosti tejto normy nie sú ani monitory srdca, ktoré používajú samostatné monitorovacie elektródy EKG, okrem prípadov, keď sa tieto využívajú len ako základ detekcie rozpoznania rytmu AED alebo detekcie pulzov srdca pri synchronizovanej kardioverzii.
