Táto medzinárodná norma špecifikuje metódu na stanovenie hodnoty pH v dažďových, pitných a minerálnych vodách, vodách na kúpanie, povrchových a podzemných vodách, ako aj v mestských a priemyselných odpadových vodách a v kvapalných kaloch v rozsahu pH od 2 do 12 s iónovou silou rozpúšťadla pod I = 0,3 mol/kg (s vodivosťou: 25°C < 2 000 mS/m) a v rozsahu teplôt od 0 C do 50 C.
