Táto revidovaná medzinárodná norma má slúžiť ako návod na spracovávanie štatistík o produkcii a distribúcii kníh, novín, periodík a elektronických publikácií.Kým 1. vydanie tejto medzinárodnej normy vychádzalo hlavne z odporúčaní týkajúcich sa medzinárodnej normalizácie štatistík o výrobe a distribúcii kníh, novín a časopisov, ktoré generálna konferencia UNESCO prijala na svojom 23. zasadnutí v Sofii 1. novembra 1985, druhé revidované vydanie tejto normy zohľadňuje ekonomické a technologické zmeny v oblasti médií, konkrétne vo vydavateľskej činnosti, a rozširuje túto normu o štatistické spracovanie produkcie elektronických publikácií.
