This IRS is the evolution of the UIC leaflet 778-3 "Recommendations for the inspection, assessment and maintenance of masonry arch bridges", 2nd edition, April 2011.
This IRS provides railway infrastructure owners, maintenance managers, bridge inspectors and consulting engineers with guidance on the inspection, assessment and maintenance of masonry arch bridges.
The IRS was prepared by the UIC "Masonry Arch Bridges" working group under the projects:
I/03/U/285 "Improving assessment, optimisation of maintenance and development of database for masonry arch bridges" (2004 - 2007)
P000259 //Assessment of masonry arch bridges// (2011 - 2015).
Further information and guidance is available in background documents and reports prepared by the members of the working-group are available from the UIC Extranet to registered users. These documents and other information on masonry arch railway bridges are listed in the Normative references.
The IRS covers the following areas:
structure and behaviour of masonry arch bridges
inspection, monitoring and condition appraisal of masonry arch bridges
assessment of load capacity and determination of service life of masonry arch bridges
maintenance and repair of masonry arch bridges.
Additional text and significant changes including deletions from the previous issue are indicated by a line in the right hand margin. Minor corrections have not been indicated.
References in the IRS to a value in an EN standard are intended for infrastructure managers within the CEN member states, and can also be recommendations for infrastructure managers in non-CEN member states unless national or regional standards apply.
