U jednotlivých vad uvádí makrosnímky i mikrosnímky, názvy, příčiny i způsoby zjišťování vady. Norma je sestavena podobně jako ČSN 42 0060, ČSN 42 0062 a další. ČSN 42 1240 byla schválena 1.4.1964 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.4.1965. Nahradila ČSN 42 1240 z r.1955
