Norma platí pro zkoušení plošných obalových materiálů (papír, karton, lepenka, plastové a kovové folie a kombinace těchto materiálů), které se používají na přímé balení poživatin. Jsou normalizovány dvě zkoušky: orientační na přítomnost pachů v materiálu a rozhodčí čichová a chuťová zkouška. Obě zkoušky jsou v normě podrobně popsány. ČSN 77 0226 byla schválena 10.8.1987 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.9.1988. Nahradila ČSN 77 0226 z r.1969
