Norma specifikuje dvě metody infračervené absorpce po natavení zkušební dávky v grafitovém kelímku v atmosféře helia pro stanovení kyslíku v oceli a železe pro obsahy kyslíku mezi 0,0005 % (MM) a 0,01 % (mm). Slučováním kyslíku ze vzorku s uhlíkem z grafitového kelímku se tvoří oxid uhelnatý, který se v konečné fázi transformuje na oxid uhličitý. Měří se absorpce infračerveného záření oxidu uhličitého nebo uhelnatého s využitím kalibrační křivky sestrojené z měření získaných na dusičnanu draselném. Norma upřesňuje požadavky na chemikálie, materiály, přístroje, odběr a přípravu vzorků, pracovní postup, vyjádření výsledků a zkušební protokol.
