Tato norma určuje metodu stanovení inhibice růstu jednobuněčných zelených řas látkami a směsmi obsaženými ve vodě nebo odpadní vodou. Tato metoda je použitelná pro látky, které jsou snadno rozpustné ve vodě. S modifikacemi této metody, popsanými v ISO 14442 a ISO 5667-16, mohou být zkoušeny inhibiční účinky málo rozpustných organických a anorganických látek, těkavých sloučenin, těžkých kovů a odpadních vod. Rychlá screeningová zkouška inhibice růstu řas v odpadní vodě je obsažena v příloze A. Alternativní postup zkoušky s řasami z alginanových kuliček, s přímým měřením růstu řas ve spektrofotometrických kyvetách je popsán v příloze B
