Norma obsahuje ISO 1177:1985. Specifikuje strukturu znaku používanou pro systémy bitově sériového arytmického a synchronního přenosu dat používající 7bitového souboru kódovaných znaků, který je předmětem ISO 4873 a rozšíření tohoto souboru kódovaných znaků, které je předmětem ISO 2022. Je též specifikován smysl parity užívané 7bitovým souborem kódovaných znaků. Používá se k přenosu informace pomocí rozhraní, které je normalizováno CCITT a IEC/ISO mezi koncovým datovým zařízením přenosu dat KZ a ukončujícím datovým zařízením UZ, jak jsou definovány v Doporučeních CCITT řad V a X. ČSN ISO 1177 (36 9209) byla vydána v únoru 1995
