Tato norma určuje metodu stanovení microcystinů v surové vodě (obsahující biomasu) a v upravené vodě, jako je vodovodní voda. Popsaná metoda je validována pro microcystin-RR, microcystin-YR a microcystin-LR. Je použitelná také pro stanovení několika strukturních variant těchto microcystinů, ale jejich jednoznačná identifikace není možná vzhledem k chybějícím komerčně dostupným standardům a ke koeluci.
Limitní hodnoty 1 g/l MCYST-LR ve vodě, kterou navrhla Světová zdravotnická organizace, lze dosáhnout po zkoncentrování microcystinu extrakcí tuhou fází (SPE).
