Tato mezinárodní norma specifikuje metodu průkazu přítomnosti (detekce) bakterií rodu Salmonella (presumptivních nebo potvrzených) ve vzorcích vody. Je možné, že pro epidemiologické účely nebo během sledování při mimořádných situacích jsou požadována také jiná média. Je možné, že tato metoda nezahrne všechny bakterie Salmonella sv. Typhi a sv. Paratyphi. Pro semikvantitativní stanovení mohou být provedeny zkoušky metodou nejpravděpodobnějšího počtu (MPN) s vhodnými objemy vzorku. V těchto případech musí být objemy tlumivé peptonové vody přiměřeně upraveny
